The Music Connection: A Joyful Way to Bring Music into Your Homeschool

Music has a way of weaving its way into our hearts and memories. It can transport us to another time, set the tone for our day, and connect us with cultures and people across the globe.
That’s why we created The Music Connection—part of the Art Makes Me Smart Membership—to make music learning approachable, hands-on, and fun for the whole family. No complicated theory. No dry lectures. Just rich, engaging lessons you can actually fit into your homeschool rhythm.

What Is The Music Connection?
The Music Connection is our open-and-go resource designed to help your family explore the beauty, history, and creativity of music.
It’s built around four core areas of study, each with video lessons and hands-on activities so you can go from “we should do more music” to “we actually do music study every week!”
Let’s take a peek inside The Music Connection…
History of Music
Step into the world of music through time—exploring different eras, styles, and the composers who shaped them. Your kids will see how music evolved alongside history and culture, giving them a deeper appreciation for the songs and symphonies they hear today.
Music & Me
This section is all about making music personal:
- Active & Passive Listening – learning how to really hear what’s going on in a piece.
- How Music Affects Emotion – exploring how a single melody can make us feel happy, calm, excited, or even a little melancholy.
- Music as an Art Prompt – turning what you hear into something you create—whether it’s a painting, poem, or dance.
Song Lab
Time to get hands-on with songwriting!
- Learn the parts of a song—melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyrics.
- Experiment with creating your own songs. Have fun playing with sound, rhythm, and words to create something uniquely yours.
Instruments
Meet the stars of the music world:
- Brass – trumpets, trombones, French horns, and tubas.
- Strings – violins, violas, cellos, bass, and harp.
- Woodwinds – flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, and saxophones.
- Percussion – drums, cymbals, maracas, and xylophones.
- Instruments of Modern Music – keyboards, electric guitars, synthesizers, and more.
Children will learn what each instrument sounds like, how it’s played, and where it fits in an orchestra or band.
Composer Studies: Meet the Masters of Music
Beyond instruments, The Music Connection includes 10 in-depth composer studies that make music history come alive. Each study blends listening, storytelling, and hands-on art, so family connects with the person behind the music.

Each composer study includes:
- Engaging biographies that highlight their life, challenges, and triumphs.
- Curated playlists so you can hear their most famous works.
- Guided listening prompts to help kids of all ages notice instruments, tempo, and mood.
