Creative Connections: Classical Conversations Science + Art Makes Me Smart

If you’re walking the Classical Conversations path, you already know how rich the memory work can be, especially in science. But if you’ve ever wondered how to make those facts stick (or how to get your hands-on learners to stop groaning during review time), this is for you.
Here at Lily & Thistle, we believe that when we start with art, learning becomes joyful, memorable, and more fun. That’s why we created the Art Makes Me Smart Membership—to help families like yours blend creativity with meaningful learning across all subjects.
Here we’re going to show you exactly how to pair Classical Conversations Science Cycle 2 with art-based projects and unit studies from the membership. Whether your child is reciting the parts of a plant or learning about animal classifications, there’s a way to reinforce it creatively, without adding a ton of prep to your already full plate.

Week 1: Creation
Explore creation through painting or drawing landscapes, plants, and/or animals.
- Ideas from Unit Studies: Seashells, Blue Whale, Octopus, Coral, Flamingo, Owl, Rabbit, Daffodil, Mushroom, Palm Leaf.
- Choose a landscape, landscape element (trees, rocks, water) or sky scene to paint in Introduction to Landscapes.
Week 2: Land Biomes
Bring biomes to life with art projects from different habitats:
- Cactus (Desert)
- Fall Leaves (Deciduous Forest)
- Palm Leaf (Tropical Rainforest)
- Pine Cone or Twig (Coniferous Forest)
- Desert Mountains (Desert)
Week 3: Types of Consumers
Paint animals from different categories. Some suggestions are below:
- Herbivores: Rabbit, Turtle
- Omnivores: Squirrel, Fox
- Carnivores: Owl
Extension Tip: Try the Insect Hotel Project from Nature Activities & Crafts for a hands-on extension. You can see tiny consumers in action! You can even research what type they are as insects can fall into different categories.
Week 4: Food Chains
Use art to map out a food chain with producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Example art projects from the Membership:
- Beetle → Frog → Owl
- Dandelion → Mouse → Owl
- Fall Leaves → Mushrooms → Beetles → Mouse → Owl
Dive deeper with the Mushroom Unit Study (book lists, STEM activity, art project, recipes, and more).
Week 5: Natural Cycles
Check out Anatomy Adventures: The Respiratory System
- Paint a project that connects lungs and trees, delving deep into the carbon and oxygen cycle as you start with art!
- Explore the carbon and oxygen cycle further with video lessons, recipes, a STEM activity, book lists, and more!
Week 6: Reaction to Environment
Learn all about one type of reaction to the environment: migration. Check out the Backyard Bird Bundle and Birding 101:
- Paint a migrating bird and trace its path.
- Build a feeder to observe migrating birds in your backyard
- Talk about how birds adapt to seasonal changes.
Week 7: Pollution
- Check out Anatomy Adventures: The Respiratory System study to learn about the importance of clean air
- Explore how mushrooms clean the earth with the Mushroom Unit Study.
Week 8: Aquatic Biomes
Choose a project from one of our ocean and sea inspired lessons. Example projects include:
- Textured Ocean
- Watercolor Sea Glass
- Summer Seascape
Explore creatures from aquatic biomes in our Unit Studies. Examples include the Blue Whale, Coral, Lobster, Octopus, Crab, or Starfish.
Week 9: Parts of the Sun
Paint the Sunshine Watercolor Project.
Optional: add solar flares, sunspots, or the corona.
Week 10: Planets
(No direct matchup yet. Revisit a favorite or jump ahead.)

Week 11: Phases of the Moon
Check out the Moon Phases Unit Study:
- Start with art by painting the different moon phases
- Delve deeper into moon phases by trying the STEM activity, reading from the curated book list, cooking from the themed recipes, attending to themed art in our picture study, watching educational videos, listening to educational podcasts and more!
Week 12: Bodies in the Solar System
Complete the Galaxy Spiral Project
- Optional extra: Add and label comets, meteors, asteroids etc
Week 13 – 14: U.S. Space Missions and States of Matter
(No direct matchup yet. Circle back to a favorite.)

Week 15: Energy
Check out Anatomy Adventures: The Muscular System to see how our bodies demonstrate energy in action.
Weeks 16–21: Newton’s Laws & Thermodynamics
(No direct matchup yet. Choose a previous project or redo a favorite.)
Week 22: Light & Observation
Paint a Modern Watercolor Rainbow to explore the visible light spectrum.
Week 23 – 24: Heat Flow and Units of Electricity
(No direct matchups yet. Pick a favorite or revisit a connection-filled lesson.)
Whether you’re deep into Cycle 2 or just dipping your toes into Classical Conversations for the first time, we hope this roundup gives you permission to infuse a little more delight into your days. You don’t have to choose between rigorous memory work and joyful, hands-on learning. You truly can have both. With the Art Makes Me Smart Membership, you’re not just reinforcing facts, you’re building wonder, confidence, and connection along the way.
So go ahead and pull out the paints. Cue the music. Crack open that picture book.
